Prep for the PSAT and the National Merit Scholarship

Recently Seattle SAT and ACT prep has been getting more inquiries about how test prep and tutoring can help a student qualify for scholarships for college. College expenses have been outpacing inflation over the past 10 to 15 years, making it more of a challenge to afford college tuition. Seattle SAT and ACT prep receives a number of questions from parents with juniors in the fall who hope to qualify for National Merit Scholarships. In order to qualify for a National Merit Scholarship, a junior must do extremely well on the PSAT. Note that no form of the ACT helps with a national merit scholarship. Also, as always, please pardon any typographical errors as our director still indoors tendinitis and uses voice recognition software. But the blog must go on!

There are also additional ways to receive scholarship money for colleges.

Families with limited assets can always qualify for federal assistance in the form of scholarships or loans that are subsidized. These are always need based and a parent must fill out a federal financial aid form the family qualifies.

There are lesser-known ways to qualify for scholarships. For example, get your library card and take a visit at your local library to see if a student might qualify for a that is not need base. For example, a local community club like a church or community resource might have funds available for students pursuing certain goals. Other niche scholarships might be goal-oriented. For example, if a certain student from a certain background is looking to study a language, prep for study abroad, or take particular classes or tutoring in math or the sciences, he or she might qualify or assistance regardless of need.

Seattle SAT and ACT Prep has been expanding services into college counseling and as we do so will post more on this subject, so please check back

Remember, the PACT does not have any qualifying scholarship money. Only the SAT does in the form of the PSAT in the junior year.

If a student is just a few points shy of The Benchmark, it’s worth noting that it can be difficult to raise the mark. It is harder to go from a 5 minute mile to a 4 minute mile then to go from a 10 minute mile to an 8 minute mile. Still, because the SAT and the PSAT are both content-based and because there is no sat essay on the PSAT, a little bit of test prep can go a long way. If you have any further questions, Seattle SAT and ACT prep is here to help.
