Online tutoring in the age of covid-19 for math, SAT, ACT etc

We have not posted to the SAT ACT prep blog in a while because of dizziness with the pandemic but we are now ready to post again. As always, please pardon any typos as our worthy and trustee director of Seattle SAT prep get tapes do to tendonitis, but the SAT and ACT prep blog Must Go On!

Let’s consider how online tutoring is affecting SAT and ACT prep.

We have found that students are rapidly adapting to this as the new Norm. In fact, initially we did social distancing at 6 feet apart in March and then during quarantine everything moved online. Zoom has quickly taken over Skype as the number one in online tutoring has it has a whiteboard built-in and more functionality give it also, we can do group tutoring lessons.

In fact, we believe online tutoring is here to stay. Wearing a mask during tutoring denies all facial expression which is much of the input needed for good prep once you sat down and created a course of action.
In addition, Seattle SAT prep has also modified how we approach teaching math for both the SAT and the ACT has a result of using Zoom. For example, we choose three different colors. The first color comes from a food to student dislikes most. The second comes from a food the student likes a medium amount and the third comes from a food student loves. When we introduce A New Concept we try and move it from the color of the food the student does not like to the color of the students does Love and we use different color pens online as we progressed. This is an idea that never occurred to us in face to face work.

The most difficult part of using Zoom involves getting to know the student. 95% of communication involves nonverbal signals. When we move from email to phone we pick up more and when we move from phone to video will you still pick up even more. However, there is no substitute for actual face-to-face body language recognition. Therefore, asking more questions and getting creative is essential the makeup to make up for the Lost signals from body language. We asked students what they like, dislike, do for fun, don’t like to do, how they are managing the pandemic, Etc
Students with special needs are most at risk of falling behind. A poor Broadband signal or computer can make or break progress and additional support from family may be required.

Seattle SAT prep is still capable of administering its Diagnostics what you go above and beyond what the PSAT or ACT scores tell us, but it involves more creativity. We have to ask students if their legs are crossed, how they are feeling during the diagnostic, and look very carefully at facial expressions.
Medical professionals feel it could be years before we returned as a culture 2 meeting in person without masks even after a vaccine. Therefore, Seattle SAT prep feels that for classroom work in small groups and for individual tutoring online tutoring will remain the norm through at least 2025. If you have any further questions or require a consultation, please do not hesitate to contact us by email or phone and as always, try to help yourself and even more importantly try to help someone else during this difficult time.
